REVIEW – Olivia’s First Term by Lyn Gardner

9326182This is the story of a girl called Olivia Marvell who goes to a stage school run by her grandmother, but she doesn’t want to go there. Her dad’s circus goes bankrupt and she is forced to go with her sister to live at the school. For a long time, she really hates it there, but then she starts to make friends…

The book is about more than just Olivia coming to terms with her new home at the school. It also is a lot about bullying and family troubles. Katie is a mean and spoilt girl who always wants to be the best, no matter what it takes or who she upsets.

Olivia is very talented at tight-rope walking but there’s no place for her to practise and she feels that she doesn’t fit in very well at the school, unlike her little sister Eel who is a great dancer. Olivia has hidden acting skills which come out during the book, though.

My favourite character in the book is Tom, because he is the first person to be nice to Olivia. I really enjoyed the stage school setting and I found reading about all the different students really interesting.

I recommend this book to everyone especially if you like books about the circus, dancing or friendship.
