The Baking Life of Amelie Day and The Great Kitten Cake Off are two books about baking competitions, but they couldn’t be more different!
The Baking Life of Amelie Day is about Amelie, whose favourite activity in the world is dreaming up things to bake and then making them. She really wants to enter the bake-off competition, and she has a good chance of success. But there is one problem – she has Cystic Fibrosis, and some days she has trouble breathing, let alone travelling to a TV studio in London and baking…
It was really interesting to read about Amelie’s struggles. I found out a lot about Cystic Fibrosis and I really felt for Amelie, wanting her to succeed. The book contains lots of recipes in between chapters and you can try them out yourself. This was a really good book. I think my favourite part is when Amelie sets up a blog about baking.
In The Great Kitten Cake Off by Anna Wilson, Ellie Haines is fed up with her family. And, with her new kitten, there is no peace at home. The only happy thing in her life is her best friend Mads. Then Mads and Ellie apply to go on The Junior Cake-Off, after lots of persuasion by Mads. But when they enter the school competition and get the losers’ prize, their friendship starts to crumble.
This book made me smile all the way through. The characters are quirky and original and their adventures in baking are really fun. The bake-off competition in this book is a lot like the real one on TV. Even the presenters sounded familiar!
Recommended for fans of Great British Bake-off, and also for anyone who loves reading about baking and life.
